The charcoal trays easily sit over the burners under the double grill. Fill with charcoal briquettes then light with the gas burners and use as a conventional charcoal bbq. Once the charcoal burns out you can either refill or ignite the gas to finish off.

Alternatively, use as a conventional gas bbq and the charcoal trays act as a flame tamer/diffuser when it’s convenience and speed you need.
