Why Choose Gro-Sure Shady Lawn Seed?

Gro-Sure Shady Lawn Seed contains grass seed varieties selected for their tolerance to shaded and drought-affected growing conditions.

Ordinary lawn seed can struggle in areas receiving limited sunlight, particularly beneath trees or alongside buildings. This specialist blend is designed to provide a practical solution for these more challenging parts of the garden.

It is suitable for establishing new lawns, overseeding thin grass and repairing worn patches.

The seed also features a treatment designed to help deter birds from feeding on freshly sown grass seed.

Ideal for Shaded and Drier Areas

This versatile lawn seed is suitable for:

  • Lawns beneath trees and around shrubs
  • Shaded areas beside buildings
  • Gardens with limited direct sunlight
  • Dry or drought-affected lawn areas
  • Thin or worn existing grass
  • Bare patches requiring repair
  • Establishing new lawns

The specially selected varieties help maintain lawn colour throughout the growing season when suitable growing conditions are maintained.

Although designed for shade tolerance, grass still requires adequate light, moisture and suitable soil conditions to establish successfully.

When to Sow Gro-Sure Shady Lawn Seed

Grass seed can generally be sown from March to October, provided growing conditions are suitable.

The ideal sowing periods are:

  • Spring: March to May
  • Autumn: September to October

For best results, aim for consistent soil temperatures of approximately 10–18°C.

Avoid sowing during periods of extreme heat, drought, frost or waterlogged conditions.

How to Sow a New Lawn

  1. Remove weeds, stones and other debris from the planting area.
  2. Dig over the soil, breaking up large lumps.
  3. Firm the soil by gently treading it down, then rake to create a level surface.
  4. Shake the Gro-Sure Shady Lawn Seed box to mix the seed.
  5. Use the built-in applicator to spread seed in two passes at right angles to each other.
  6. Apply at approximately 30g per m².
  7. Lightly rake the seed into the soil surface.
  8. For additional soil preparation, the manufacturer recommends applying Gro-Sure Lawn Seeding Soil to a depth of 3–4cm.

How to Thicken an Existing Lawn

Gro-Sure Shady Lawn Seed can also be used to improve the appearance of thin or patchy lawns.

  1. Remove weeds and mow the existing grass closely.
  2. Aerate compacted soil using a garden fork.
  3. Level shallow hollows with a suitable lawn dressing if required.
  4. Shake the seed box before application.
  5. Spread evenly in two passes at right angles.
  6. Apply at approximately 25g per m².
  7. Lightly rake the seed into the soil.

Caring for Your Lawn After Sowing

After sowing, gently firm the soil by walking over the area or using a garden roller.

Water thoroughly using a fine-rose watering can or sprinkler, taking care not to wash the seeds away.

Continue watering regularly until the new grass is established. During particularly hot weather, water later in the day once the sun has gone down.

Avoid allowing the soil surface to dry out during germination.

When the new grass reaches approximately 5–8cm in height, mow it for the first time. Gradually reduce the cutting height to around 2.5cm as the lawn becomes established.

After approximately eight weeks, the manufacturer recommends feeding with a suitable lawn fertiliser.
