The joyful birdsong and the increasing warmth of the sun is upon us this month, and already we have seen some beautiful weather! It is now the perfect time to get yourself a stunning dahlia! Dahlias are an easy to grow plant with big rewards! You will need to make sure when planting Dahlia tubers that they are not going to be in cold soil and additionally upon sprouting make sure the new shoots are protected from any frost as they are still very tender. Dahlias like to be planted in well drained soil in a sunny location. When plants are around 12” tall, pinch off the top of the main stem, this will stimulate lateral branching and result in more stems and flowers through till late summer. It’s recommended to water your dahlias weekly during the growing and flowering stages and also to apply a mulch around the base of the plants which will help reduce moisture loss and keep the roots cooler. To help boost flower production two simple tasks can be undertook; the first being to give the plant a feed with an all purpose fertiliser once a month from when the first flower buds appear and secondly, to dead head regularly any flowers that have gone over. We have a large selection of different, colourful Dahlias here at Woldens, so why not come have a look and grab yourself the splash of colour every garden needs.
